Myanmar to get ADB loan for upgrading Yangon transmission network

Xinhua, November 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

Myanmar will get a loan of 80 million U.S. dollars from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for upgrading Yangon's electricity transmission ring line system, an official report said Wednesday.

The loan, which was announced by the ADB on Tuesday, will be used to upgrade the Thida-Thakayta-Kyaikkasan transmission ring lines to 230 KV from 66 KV and build two new substations at South Okkalapa township and West University.

Yongon is the largest city in the Southeast Asian country.

Myanmar's aging and overloaded transmission network needs urgent improvement to ensure stable and ample power supply to support the country's efforts for economic growth and poverty reduction, according to an ADB expert.

The ADB expected that Myanmar's economy would grow at a rate of around 7.8 percent annually over the next decade and the growing demand for power is estimated to be around 9 percent annually through to 2030.

The Myanmar government has drawn up a development master plan to meet its energy goals. Enditem
