The U.S. State Department on Tuesday "strongly condemns" the deadly attack against the Tunisian Presidential Guard bus in Tunis, Tunisia, which killed at least 12 people.

"We extend our deepest sympathies to the victims' families and have offered assistance with Tunisian authorities' investigation," State Department spokesman Mark Toner said in a statement.

Toner said that U.S. State Secretary John Kerry have reaffirmed his country's cooperations with Tunisian leaders earlier this month and "will continue to support" the North African country.

At least 12 security officers were killed and 17 injured in the bus explosion Tuesday late afternoon in downtown Tunis, according to the Presidency's statement.

The statement also described the attack as "terrorist". Endite
