Berlin edged Hoffenheim 1-0 by courtesy of Eugen Polanski's own goal and Ingolstadt bounced back to beat Ingolstadt 3-1 to close the 13th round of German Bundesliga on Sunday.
Pal Dardai's men defended the fourth place in the standings as the "Old Lady" capitalized on an own goal by Hoffenheim's Eugen Polanski to snatch three points in snowy conditions. Meanwhile, relegation threatened Hoffenheim extend their winless run to six games.
Due to the snowy conditions both sides struggled to work out goal scoring opportunities. Berlin's first chance came with 17 minutes into the game but Salomon Kalou failed to get his effort on target.
However, the 37,045 spectators at Berlin's Olympia stadium had to wait until the half-hour mark to see the opener as Hoffenheim's Polanski headed home Marvin Plattenhardt's free kick into the penalty area into the wrong goal.
After the restart, Berlin retracted and kept all their men in their territory whereas Hoffenheim turned up. Nevertheless, the visitors lacked in penetration and failed to pose any threat to Berlin's defence.
Berlin almost gave away their narrow lead with an own goal but John Anthony Brooks' miscued clearance attempt missed the right post just wide in the closing period.
With the seventh victory of the campaign Berlin defend the fourth place in the standings while Hoffenheim drop to the last place after suffering the seventh loss in the 13th game.
Elsewhere, Ingolstadt returned to winning ways as they came from behind to overcome Darmstadt 3-1. Both newly promoted teams staged an offensively minded encounter with the better end for Ingolstadt, who scored three second-half goals to seal the deal.
However, Darmstadt secured a bright start on the road as Aytac Sulu nodded home Konstantin Rausch's corner kick from five meters to break the deadlock with nine minutes played.
Ingolstadt bounced back after the break as Robert Bauer unleashed a hammer into the roof of the net to restore parity at the 58th minute before Moritz Hartmann converted a foul play penalty to ensure the 2-1 lead two minutes later.
The hosts weren't done with the scoring as Moritz Hartmann sewed up his brace to make the game safe with two minutes to spare.
Ingolstadt move up from the 10th to the 8th place while Darmstadt stay on the 13th place in the table. Endi
