Sri Lanka Navy arrests 14 Indian fishermen in local waters

Xinhua, November 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Sri Lankan Navy has assisted the Sri Lanka Coast Guard to arrest 14 Indian fishermen for illegally poaching in local waters, the navy media unit said Thursday.

The fishermen were taken into custody along with three fishing trawlers in the northern seas, in close proximity to Delft island.

The navy said that the arrested fishermen and the trawlers were brought to Karainagar in the north and handed over to the officials of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources for onward action.

Sri Lanka and India have been trying to resolve the long-standing fishermen issue with both sides having to face arrest and boats being detained when they stray into each other's waters illegally.

Recently both countries agreed to release all the fishermen in their custody as a goodwill gesture. Endit
