Cameroon advance in 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier

Xinhua, November 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

Cameroon moved to the next round of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup after a 0-0 draw with Niger at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaounde on Tuesday.

The Indomitable Lions beat Niger (Menas) 3-0 in the first leg in Niamey, Niger, on Friday.

This is a good start for coach Alexandre Belinga, who replaced German coach Volker Finke after Cameroon was eliminated in the first round of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Belinga's post was in danger when the team was eliminated in the first round of the 2015 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) that took place in Equatorial Guinea from January to February.

Cameroon have participated in the FIFA World Cup five times, and in 1990 they reached the quarter-finals before being won by England 3-2 in extra-time.

The Indomitable Lions have won the African Cup of Nations four times as well as also winning Olympic gold medal in Sydney, Australia, in 2000. Endit
