85 mph winds hit Britain

Xinhua, November 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

Heavy winds traveling at speeds of more than 80 miles per hour (mph) swept across Britain as storm "Barney" arrived in the country Tuesday.

The Met Office issued yellow "be aware" severe weather warnings for storm Barney as it brought wind gusts across southern England, Wales and the Midlands Tuesday evening.

According to local media reports, gusts of 85 mph were recorded in Aberdaron and 79 mph in Pembrey Sands Wales, and 61 mph in Bristol, southwest England.

"Storm Barney is expected to be a fast moving storm system bringing a few hours of severe gales to southern parts of Britain later this afternoon and evening. It brings the potential for travel disruption and could bring down trees," said Eddy Carroll, chief meteorologist of the Met Office.

"With the strength of the winds, large waves could also affect some coastal areas," he added.

Heavy winds caused power failures in around 2,700 homes and business in north Wales, local media said.

Meanwhile, floods triggered by persistent rainfall also affected roads, farmlands and train services in north England.

It said gales were expected to ease off early on Wednesday. Endit
