China donates anti-malaria drugs to Ghana

Xinhua, November 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Chinese government has donated 600,000 vials of artesunate for injection, an anti-malaria drug, to Ghana.

Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Sun Baohong, and Ghana's Health Minister, Alex Segbefia, on Tuesday attended a handover ceremony.

The drugs are worth about 1.3 million U.S. dollars, and are produced by a Chinese company.

"We wish all these anti-malaria drugs will play a crucial role in treating the disease and saving people's lives in this country," Sun said.

China has been donating anti-malaria drugs to Ghana since 2006, according to the ambassador, and it has been supporting Ghana's health sector through construction of hospitals and personnel training.

Sun said the forthcoming Johannesburg Summit of Forum on China-Africa Cooperation due in December will give the two sides a platform to strengthen their cooperation in various areas including healthcare.

Segbefia expressed great gratitude to the Chinese government and people for their support in Ghana's health sector.

He said he was impressed by the large number of drugs donated by the Chinese government.

"It is a demonstration of the continuing relationship that we've had with China," he said, describing China as "a significant global player in the health of the people of the world." Endit
