Number of migrants at southern Austrian border sees renewed increase

Xinhua, November 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

The number of migrants wishing to enter Austria at the southern border town of Spielfeld has risen continuously over the past days, local media reported on Tuesday.

About 3,800 persons were already at the Spielfeld gathering point in the morning, with a further 3,600 waiting directly across the border in Slovenia.

By afternoon, authorities reported 2,900 persons remained at the Spielfeld site, while the number had grown to 5,000 people waiting to enter Austria via Slovenia.

Police authorities spoke of a "strong increase" in the number of migrants wishing to enter into Austria, with the trend expected to continue.

They said transport capacity for the migrants was presently holding up, though vacancies in emergency living quarters were gradually becoming full, which in turn had slowed the onward transport of the migrants.

The Red Cross also reported that it had provided medical care for 350 persons on Tuesday evening, and that an Afghan woman had given birth at the Spielfeld site, after which she and the newborn child were transported to a hospital in Graz. Endit
