Myanmar to draft framework for holding political dialogue

Xinhua, November 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

Myanmar is planning to form a Union Peace Dialogue Joint Committee (UPDJC) to start drafting a framework for holding political dialogue as part of the country's peace process, sources with the Myanmar Peace Center said Tuesday.

The UPDJC, involving 16 representatives each from the government, ethnic armed groups and political parties, are set to meet on Nov. 24 after the political parties select their 16 representatives on Nov. 21, U Aung Min, vice chairman of the government's Union Peace Making Work Committee (UPWC), told the second Joint Implementation Coordination Meeting (JICM) on Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement.

Drafting of the framework for political dialogue is expected to begin before Dec. 14 and the formal dialogue is expected to start before Jan. 14, 2016 to lay foundation for the peace process.

U Aung Min highlighted the government's pledge to implement the Nationwide Ceasefire Accord (NCA) while striving to realize the political dialogue and bring non-ceasefire-signatory groups into the signing during the remaining period of its term.

Myanmar government and eight ethnic armed groups have agreed at their first JICM on Oct. 31 that both sides adhere to some post-ceasefire steps until 30 days after the signing of the NCA on Oct. 15.

The two sides were set to draw up a political framework within 60 days after the formal NCA signing and start a political dialogue within 90 days. Endit
