6,944 candidates cleared to contest in Burkina Faso's legislative polls

A total of 6,944 candidates have been cleared to contest in Burkina Faso's legislative polls scheduled for Nov. 29, an official source said on Monday.

The elections will see 127 members of parliament elected to form the country's parliament.

Since the October 2014 popular uprising that overthrew the regime of Blaise Compaore, the National Transition Council, with 90 members, has been playing the role of Burkina Faso's interim parliament.

The final list has 4,870 men and 2,074 women proposed by 81 political parties and 19 independent groups.

Electoral campaigns for the legislative elections opened on Nov. 14, whereas that of presidential elections which will be held on the same day, opened on Nov. 8, 2015.

According to the National Independent Electoral Commission, over 5.5 million registered voters will be expected to cast their votes to elect Burkina Faso's new president and members of parliament.

Voting will be conducted in 17,898 polling stations, and 25,000 defense and security forces will be deployed across the country to secure the voting process. Endite
