Heavy rains bring southern Indian city of Chennai to standstill

Xinhua, November 16, 2015 Adjust font size:

Heavy rains since late Sunday night brought the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu's capital Chennai to a standstill on Monday.

"Heavy rains have been lashing Chennai due to a depression in the Bay of Bengal. Various parts of the city are now flooded and boats are being used to rescue those stranded," a senior official said.

School and colleges have announced holiday while office-goers had a harrowing time in the morning as road traffic was badly affected due to water-logging across the city.

According to the weather department, Chennai has so far received 27 cms of rainfall and no relief is in sight as heavy showers are likely to continue till Tuesday.

Heavy showers last week wrecked havoc on Tamil Nadu, killing over 50 people in rain-related incidents, and many complained that the state government has been caught unprepared yet again. Endit
