Shenzhen ends Guangdong's winning streak, Xinjiang remain unbeaten

Xinhua, November 15, 2015 Adjust font size:

Shenzhen snapped Guangdong's winning streak with a 92-88 victory in the sixth round of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) league on Sunday, while Xinjiang continued their unbeaten run after fending off a late charge from Zhejiang.

Guangdong, which has won four games in a row, jumped to 11-4 in front as Will Bynum poured in nine points at the opening stage. Bobby Brown then helped Shenzhen overtake the lead through a string of three-pointers.

The lead changed hands several times in the second and third period and Shenzhen held a slight advantage of three points at 68-65 into the last quarter.

Guangdong managed to tie the game at 86-86 with less than two minutes left, but they could not go further and had to accept their first defeat in five games.

"Bobby Brown was excellent, we couldn't stop him. But we did have problems in defense, and some free throws were not satisfactory," said Guangdong coach Du Feng.

Brown scored a game-high 33 points, Zhao Jie collected 19 points and Dominic McGuire contributed 11 points and 15 rebounds for Shenzhen. Yi Jianlian grabbed 28 points and 21 rebounds, Will Bynum added 22 points for Guangdong.

Xinjiang once led as many as 23 points in their game against Zhejiang, which were seeking their first victory of the season. But the visitors fought back in the third quarter to cut down the difference to 4 points as Xinjiang made many errors. The home team stayed calm in the last period and eventually closed out the game 103-101 for their sixth straight win.

Underdogs Sichuan remained unbeaten as well, after they overwhelmed Foshan 124-113. But Sichuan relied too heavily on their foreign trio of Justin Dentmon, Mike Harris and Hamed Haddadi, who combined for 88 points.

In Sunday's other matches, Zhejiang beat Tongxi 113-108, Aolong defeated Fujian 103-91, Guangsha downed Shanxi 105-91, Liaoning beat Jilin 119-100, Shanghai upset defending champions Beijing 98-93, Qingdao beat Tianjin 117-101, Bayi lost to Shandong 105-81. Endi
