Iran continues talks with Airbus to buy passenger planes

Despite the cancellation of President Hassan Rouhani's visit to Paris, Iran continues talks with the leading French Airbus company to buy passenger planes, Iranian Minister of Roads and Urban Development Abbas Akhoundi said on Sunday.

"Our visit to Europe was cancelled but negotiations and other work for the purchase of planes are still underway," Akhoundi was quoted as saying by Press TV.

"We are negotiating with first-class aircraft suppliers for buying the airplanes we need," he added.

Earlier, Akhoundi said that Iran was talking to both Airbus and Boeing to acquire aircraft under lease or sale deals.

According to Akhoundi, Iran's civil aviation fleet consists of 248 aircrafts with an average age of 20 years.

On Saturday, Rouhani cancelled his scheduled visit to France following Friday's terrorist attacks in Paris.

Tehran would order Airbus aircraft during Rouhani's state visit to Paris, a deal that could generate billions of euros to the struggling French economy and open promising market for domestic products, Rouhani said in an interview with local broadcaster Europe 1 and state-run France 2 TV channel on Wednesday.
