Myanmar president promises to systematically transfer power to new gov't

Myanmar President U Thein Sein on Sunday promised to transfer power to the coming new government after the recent general election.

U Thein Sein made the remarks when meeting for the first time with political parties at the Office of Yangon Region Government a week after the country's general election, in which the National League for Democracy (NLD) party, led by Aung San Suu Kyi, dominated the absolute majority of the parliamentary seats.

The current government will implement work for smooth and peaceful transition during the remaining period of its term in line with the existing laws, procedures, prescriptions and practices, he told the political parties in his opening speech.

He called for convening the second term of the parliament in order to carry out the peaceful transfer systematically to the emerging new government.

Speaking of the Nationwide Ceasefire Accord (NCA) with various ethnic armed groups, he believed that the new government would implement it to the best of its ability based on the already achieved foundation for domestic peace.

At the meeting, Spokesman of the NLD U Nyan Win also promised to undertake the future task peacefully , upholding the principle of national reconciliation which the party has as always been adopting since its establishment.

Myanmar held a historic general election on last Sunday and according to the election result, the NLD has won rights to independently form new government under the constitution due to securing enough seats in the two-House Union Parliament.

According to disclosure, the new parliament session will take place in January 2016 and presidential run will follow in February and formation of the new government will be at the end of March following the expiry of the present term of the government. Enditem
