Roundup: United Nations slams deadly terrorist attacks in Paris

The UN Security Council, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and President of the 70th session of the UN General Assembly Mogens Lykketoft on Friday condemned a series of terrorist attacks in Paris, which have reportedly killed at least 140 people.

"The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the barbaric and cowardly terrorist attacks" which rocked at least seven different places in Paris on Friday evening, the 15-nation UN body said in a statement issued to the press here.

The members of the Security Council expressed their deep sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the government of France, the statement said.

"The members of the Security Council underlined the need to bring the perpetrators of these terrorist acts to justice," the statement added.

In a separate statement earlier on Friday, the UN secretary-general condemned "the despicable terrorist attacks carried out today in various locations in and around Paris," and demanded an "immediate release of the numerous individuals reportedly being held hostage in the Bataclan theatre," said a statement issued here by Ban's spokesman.

"The secretary-general trusts that the French authorities will do all in their power to bring the perpetrators to justice quickly," said the statement.

"The secretary-general extends his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured," the statement said. "He stands with the government and people of France."

Lykketoft said on Friday that "the whole world is outraged by the attacks in Paris" and "terrorism and murder of this kind is an outrage to humanity."

"The whole world is outraged by the attacks in Paris and will stand in solidarity with the French government and the people of France," Lykketoft said in a statement issued here on behalf of the United Nations General Assembly.

"My heart goes out to the families of all those killed, injured and taken hostage and to France which once again is bearing the brunt of the fight against terrorism," said the statement.

"We must all stand together to fight this outrageous brutality," the statement said. "It will not succeed and it has no place in the modern world." Endi
