Third Chinese ferry boat to operate in Rio

Xinhua, November 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

The third Chinese ferry boat which will operate in the Rio-Niteroi ferry line, transporting passengers from one side of the Guanabara Bay to another, docked in Rio's port on Thursday.

The so-called Itacoatiara ferry boat is the third of nine ferry boats built by AFAI Southern Shipyard (Guangzhou Panyu), a company owned by the CSIC and China Shipping Groups, and purchased by the Rio de janeiro state Transport Secretariat.

The ferry was named after a famous Niteroi beach, and is the same model as the two other Chinese ferries operating in the line, Sugar Loaf and Corcovado, named after Rio's most famous tourist destinations.

The Itacoatiara ferry can carry up to 2,000 passengers per trip, and is more silent, comfortable and accessible than the old vehicles operating in Rio's ferry lines.

With the arrival of an extra boat, the traffic in the Rio-Niteroi ferry line is expected to be better in rush hours.

Chinese vehicles are becoming commonplace in Rio: in addition to the ferry lines, there are Chinese urban trains and subway trains circulating in the city, an indication of the increasing recognition of China's known-how in the production of public transportation vehicles. Endi
