A Cambodian court on Friday issued an arrest warrant for Sam Rainsy, president of the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), on the charges of defamation and inciting discrimination.
According to the arrest warrant issued by Sy Vanny, deputy prosecutor of the Phnom Penh Municipal Court, the warrant was made after Kar Savuth, lawyer for Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Hor Namhong, on Friday requested the court to implement a final verdict on Sam Rainsy.
Sam Rainsy"was charged with public defamation and inciting discrimination"after he alleged Hor Namhong served for the former Democratic Kampuchea in a speech at the Choeung Ek Museum in Phnom Penh on April 17, 2008, said the arrest warrant.
It added that "Sam Rainsy was sentenced to two years in prison by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court (in April 2011), but he has not served his jail term yet."
The court "decides to order the authorities to arrest convict Sam Rainsy to carry out his jail term at the Interior Ministry's prison," the warrant said.
Sam Rainsy is currently visiting Japan.
The warrant was issued just a day after Prime Minister Hun Sen warned to take legal action against Sam Rainsy over a recent claim that the ruling Cambodian People's Party plans to cancel the 2018 national election because it is afraid of losing. Endit
