Singapore's ruling party unveils 12 government Parliamentary Committees

Xinhua, November 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

Singapore's ruling People's Action Party (PAP) on Friday unveiled 12 Government Parliamentary Committees (GPCs) for the 13th Parliament of Singapore, which will first sit in January 2016.

The new line-up of backbencher committees will scrutinize legislation and programs of the various ministries. Two separate GPCs were formed for the Ministry of National Development (MND) and the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources (MEWR) instead of a combined one in the past.

All the GPCs are helmed by veteran backbench Members of Parliament, but newly-elected MPs are serving as deputies in three committees, the Straits Times reported.

In 1987, Singapore's then-Deputy Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong mooted GPCs, which serve as an additional channel of feedback on government policies. Endit
