Migrant crisis "out of control": Austrian FM

Xinhua, November 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

Austrian Minister for Foreign Affairs and Integration Sebastian Kurz described the ongoing migrant crisis as being "obviously out of control," during an interview on television station ServusTV on Thursday.

Kurz supported his government's planned construction of a fence at the southern Austrian border to stem the flow of migrants, saying the argument that one can simply create more quarters for refugees to stay in is a "misconception."

He said that border security must first and foremost be established at the European Union's outer borders, and should this prove unsuccessful, an increasing number of states will attempt to bring the situation at their own borders under control.

He denied that his stance on stopping the flow of migrants is right-wing, but rather "realistic," and said those people who believe integration of the migrants is no problem "are wrong."

He added that the cost for care comes from taxpayer funds. With 95,000 asylum seekers now expected in Austria in 2015, the cost of care can be estimated at around one billion euros a year (1.07 billion U.S. dollars), the minister said. Endi
