Heavy rains lash southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, killing 50

Xinhua, November 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least 50 people had died since Monday in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu that has been hit by heavy rains, with capital Chennai being the worst affected.

"Some 50 people have died in rain-related incidents in the state since November 9, most of them from the district of Cuddalore," a senior government official said Friday.

Meanwhile, Chennai has completely come to a halt, with commuter trains delayed and schools and colleges shut in the wake of the rains that lashed the city for the fifth day in a row.

"It's a mayhem in Chennai with heavy overnight rains inundating rail tracks and many low-lying areas of the city," the official said on condition of anonymity.

Several offices, schools and colleges were shut in Chennai. In fact, this is the third time that a holiday has been declared for educational institutions in the city since Monday.

The state has been witnessing heavy rains since Monday when a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal crossed near the Tamil Nadu coast. Endit
