Tokyo stocks close down on concerns for global economic outlook

Tokyo stocks ended lower Friday as U.S. and European shares losing ground overnight dampened investor sentiment amid rising concerns about the health of the global economy.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 100.86 points, or 0.51 percent, from Thursday to close at 19,596.91, while the broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange fell 7.74 points, or 0.49 percent, to end at 1,585.83.

Comprising major decliners on the last trading day of the week were utilities, shipping and mining-linked shares.

The turnover for the day was 2,468.4 billion yen (about 20.13 billion U.S. dollars). Endit
