Algeria repatriates 274 Nigerien migrants

Xinhua, November 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

As many as 274 illegal Nigerien migrants have been repatriated to their country of origin on Thursday from Algeria's southernmost province of Tamanrasset, local media reported.

Citing officials at the Algerian Red Crescent, APS news agency said it is the 20th operation of its kind this year, adding that this repatriation process has been launched by Algerian authorities at the request of the government of Niger.

The 274 repatriated migrants were living illegally in several provinces all around Algeria. They were taken to a reception center of Tamanrasset near the border with Niger.

Other Nigerien illegal migrants who were living in other provinces will soon arrive at the Tamanrasset reception centre pending their repatriation.

At the request of Niger government, Algeria repatriated thousands of migrants to their country of origin in 2014.

In October 2013, 92 people of different African nationalities died in the desert at about 10 km from the border between Niger and Algeria, after they were abandoned by their smugglers. Endit
