Fence construction for S. Austrian border almost confirmed

Xinhua, November 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

Austrian Interior Minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner Thursday said a fence to be constructed at the southern Austrian border town of Spielfeld to help tackle the migrant crisis is all but confirmed.

The final decision will be made on Friday, though Mikl-Leitner said at a press conference that the remaining decision in the drawn-out debate over the fence is how long it will be.

She did not give further details though media reports indicated that it will not be the maximum given length of 25 km.

Rather, it will likely be a short fence on both sides of the Spielfeld site, stretching about five km northeast and several km southwest.

The APA also reported that the fence would be in the form of a chain-link fence at first, to prevent injury to people, followed in a kind of second row by a barbed-wire fence.

The ending points of both sides of the fence will be subject to regular patrols.

The Interior Ministry is to hold a final round of negotiations with the Defence Ministry on Friday morning to finalize the plans.

"The patience of citizens is at an end and mine is too," Mikl-Leitner said of the protracted and at times controversial debate over the fence. Enditem
