Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday kicked off his three-day official visit to Britain, as the two sides seek to "build modern partnership" and deepen economic cooperation.
During his trip, Modi is expected to meet British Queen Elizabeth II, hold talks with his British counterpart David Cameron, visit a statue of Indian sage Mahatma Gandhi and sign a series of trade deals with his host.
"It's an opportunity for two countries, tied by history, people and values, to work together to overcome the biggest challenges of our age," British Prime Minister David Cameron said Thursday ahead of the visit.
"Prime Minister Modi and I intend to grab that opportunity with both hands. Because in doing so, we can make two of the greatest countries in the world even greater," he added.
In a statement, Downing Street said the two leaders would seek to "open a new chapter" in the UK-India relationship, focused on building a "modern partnership" based on tackling shared challenges and promoting mutual prosperity.
Cameron will welcome the Indian Prime Minister by saying that "the UK and India should work to make our strong partnership even stronger."
"The Prime Minister will make clear that's why this visit will see UK companies announcing new deals in India that will have them training more Indian workers, expanding businesses and ensuring new markets for British design and innovation," Downing Street noted.
Modi said his visit aimed to strengthen cooperation with "a traditional friend".
"India-UK ties will receive a great impetus. Will attend a wide range of programmes in UK," he tweeted upon his arrival in London. Endit
