Mexican writer Fernando del Paso awarded Cervantes Prize

The Mexican writer Fernando del Paso was awarded the 30th Cervantes Prize on Thursday, the most important prize for literature in Spain.

The prize carried a cash award of 125,000 euros (134,124 U.S. dollars) and will be delivered on April, 23, 2016, on the anniversary of the death of Spain's famous writer Miguel de Cervantes, the author of Don Quixote.

Del Paso was born in Ciudad de Mexico on Apr. 1, 1935. His most prestigious works is Noticias del Imperio wherein the writer tells the story of the Mexican emperor who ruled between 1864 and 1867, Maximiliano de Habsburgo, and his wife, Carlota.

Del Paso considers this part of Mexico's history as one of the most surreal and wonderful. "I found this story tragic, wonderful and surrealist enough to take care of it," he said in an interview with Spanish newspaper El Pais last year.

Other works of the Mexican author are Jose Trigo, about the Mexican revolution, or Palinuro de Mexico, considered by some to be an autobiographical work.

Del Paso is the sixth Mexican writer to be awarded Cervantes Prize. Others who also received it were Octavio Paz (1981), Carlos Fuentes (1987), Sergio Pitol (2005), Jose Emilio Pacheco (2009) and Elena Poniatowska (2013).

Last year, Spanish author Juan Goytisolo was awarded the prize. Endit
