Burkina Faso judiciary warns candidates against violating penal code

Xinhua, November 12, 2015 Adjust font size:

Burkina Faso prosecutor on Wednesday warned candidates in the Nov. 29 presidential and legislative elections against violation of electoral laws during campaigns, a judicial source said.

In a statement, the prosecutor warned against "making inflammatory remarks, engaging in any form of violence, threatening freedom of expression and engaging in electoral fraud."

Earlier, it was a coalition of intellectuals, professors and activists that asked the population and the candidates not to use ethnic or religious divisions during campaigns for the forthcoming elections.

Over 5 million Burkinabes will be expected to cast their votes on Nov. 29 to elect a new president and members of parliament.

Fourteen candidates are in the presidential race which is expected to restore constitutional order that was disrupted following the fall of Blaise Compaore's regime in October 2014.

According to security sources, 25,000 security officers have been mobilized to secure the electoral campaign which is going on in a fragile security context that is characterised by terrorist threats in the sub-region. Enditem
