Overseas visitors help drive New Zealand accommodation boom

Xinhua, November 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

Record numbers of visitors from China and Australia have contributed to a record September for New Zealand's accommodation sector, the government statistics agency said Wednesday.

Guest nights in commercial accommodation nationally were up 5.2 percent year on year to 2.47 million in September, according to Statistics New Zealand.

"Most of the rise in guest nights for September was in the South Island," business indicators senior manager Neil Kelly said in a statement.

Domestic guest nights were up 3.9 percent year on year, and international guest nights were up 7.7 percent.

For the year ended September, national guest nights were up 5.3 percent from the September 2014 year.

Overseas visitor arrivals in New Zealand in September rose by 12 percent year on year, driven by record numbers from Australia and China, the agency said last month.

Visitor arrivals to New Zealand numbered 217,000 in September, with arrivals from Australia up almost 10 percent to 113,088.

China contributed the highest-ever number of visitors for the month of September, up 41 percent to almost 26,000. Endit
