Thousands of S.Koreans join class-action lawsuit against Volkswagen

Xinhua, November 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

Thousands of South Korean owners of Volkswagen models have joined a class-action lawsuit against the German automaker, local media reported Wednesday.

As of Nov. 6, a total of 1,536 South Korean owners of Volkswagen and its luxury brand Audi cars participated in the collective lawsuit filed with the Seoul Central District Court through a local law firm.

A lawyer of the law firm was quoted as saying that more than 400 customers of Volkswagen and Audi cars are set to join the class-action suit once a week, noting that about 6,000 people were preparing documents necessary for participating in the lawsuit.

Those joining the lawsuit demanded the cancellation of their purchase or full refunds, according to media reports.

Volkswagen was found to have fabricated software embedded in about 11 million diesel engines globally that is in operation when taking an emissions test to cheat on regulators.

Complaints among South Korean customers increased as Volkswagen decided Monday to compensate customers in Canada and the United States with 1,000 U.S. dollars of voucher and other compensation as well as free repair for three years. No compensation plan has been announced for South Korean customers yet.

About 95,581 Volkswagen cars and 29,941 Audi models are expected to be subject to a recall here in connection with the emissions fabrication scandal. Enditem
