UN Security Council welcomes appointment of Sidikou as special representative for DRC

Xinhua, November 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

UN Security Council on Monday welcomed the appointment of Maman S. Sidikou as special representative of the secretary-general for the Democratic Republic of the Congo(DRC), said a statement of the president of the council.

Sidikou also heads the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO). The council assured him of its full support, said the statement.

The 15-member body also commended his predecessor Martin Kobler for his engagement and important contribution over the past two years in supporting the implementation of the MONUSCO mandate.

Noting some progress has been made in the security situation in eastern DRC over the past 14 years, the council remained "deeply concerned over the ongoing security and humanitarian crisis due to ongoing destabilizing activity of foreign and domestic armed groups."

Therefore, the priority is to neutralize "armed groups in the DRC, in particular the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) as well as the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), the Front for Patriotic Resistance of Ituri (FRPI) and the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA)," said the statement.

Moreover, the council reiterated "the importance of the extension of state authority over territory vacated by armed groups and of the effective disarmament, demobilization and reintegration of former combatants."

Violence and abuses of human rights remain rampant in the country, especially in eastern DRC.

The Security Council condemned in particular such violations and abuses as targeted attacks against civilians, widespread sexual and gender-based violence, systematic recruitment and use of children by armed groups, among others. Enditem
