France strikes IS oil facility in Syria: ministry

Xinhua, November 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

French fighter jets destroyed an oil supply centre controlled by the Islamic State (IS) group in Deir ez-Zor, southeast Syria, the defense ministry announced on Monday.

In coordination with the United States-led coalition, France's two Mirage 2000 fighter jets hit an IS oil facility during a two-hour mission, the ministry said in a statement posted on its website.

By striking the oil production capacity controlled by Daech in Syria, the move targeted the group's financial resources, the statement said.

Joining U.S.-led coalition military offensive against the militant group in Syria at the end of September, Paris has conducted two waves of air strikes targeting training camps which, according to French officials, export militants to attack French interests.

On Thursday last week, French President Francois Hollande said the country will send aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle to back operations against IS in Syria and Iraq.

France has already deployed 12 jet fighters based in the United Arab Emirates and Jordan. Endit
