German Football Association chief resigns amid corruption probe

Xinhua, November 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

The president of the German Football Association (DFB) on Monday resigned as an investigation on vote-buying for the World Cup in 2006 is going on.

"I was always there from the first day of the 2006 World Cup bid right up until the tournament's conclusion, and in all these years not only have I always gone about my work with great passion, but I have also always worked in good faith and in a proper manner," said Wolfgang Niersbach in a statement.

"In order to protect the DFB and this office, it is with a heavy heart that I am stepping down as DFB president," he said.

Niersbach, 64, has been the DFB president since 2012. Investigators raided the offices of DFB on Nov. 3. Prosecutors are investigating a payment of 6.7 million euros (7.21 U.S. dollars) to FIFA, which was reportedly used to help Germany win the the right to host the 2006 World Cup. Enditem
