Two employees of the Serbian embassy were kidnapped on Sunday in Libya, the Serbian Foreign Ministry confirmed in a press release.
The press release reads that communication officer Sladjana Stankovic and a driver Jovica Stepic were taken in the afternoon in the city of Sabratha in the northwest of Libya, and that ministry had notified security services in Libya about this.
"Ministry of foreign affairs of Serbia does all in its power to secure as much information possible about the case and the safe return of our citizens in such a complicated situation," the press release reads, adding that Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic talked with Libyan foreign minister Mohammed al-Dairi about this issue.
At this point there were no requests for ransom, but Serbian television B92 exclusively reported that an attack was launched by unknown persons who opened fire on the car convoy in Sabratha.
According to them, the ambassador who was in a separate vehicle was not hurt, while the people in the other car were kidnapped. One Libyan citizen was reportedly injured.
B92 reported that there are suspicions that this was a planned attack. Endit
