India all set to appoint its first transgender police inspector

Xinhua, November 6, 2015 Adjust font size:

India is set to appoint its first transgender police inspector after the High Court in the southern state of Tamil Nadu has recently declared her physically fit.

The 25-year-old transgender, K. Prithika Yashini, had moved to the High Court in Tamil Nadu's capital Chennai, following the rejection of her application by the state police recruitment board.

Yashini, who was born and brought up as a boy named Pradeep Kumar, was excited with the landmark order of the High Court to induct her as a sub-inspector of police.

"I am excited. It's a new beginning for the entire transgender community," Yashini told the media in her reaction to the order.

Her lawyer, Bhavani, was equally excited with order. "This order would open new opportunities for many transgenders," she said. Endit
