Ireland advises against non-essential travel to Egypt

Xinhua, November 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs on Thursday updated its travel warnings for Egypt, advising against all non-essential travel to the country.

"Irish citizens are advised to avoid non-essential travel to Egypt at this time due to a heightened threat of terrorist incidents, including targeted attacks against foreigners, and a continuing threat of civil unrest," the department said on its website.

Irish citizens in Sharm el-Sheikh are advised to exercise a high degree of caution and to avoid travelling outside the resort, it said.

Irish citizens intending to fly into or out of Sharm el-Sheikh should note the direction issued by the Irish Aviation Authority on Thursday to Irish airline operators not to operate to or from Sharm el-Sheikh airport or in the Egyptian Sinai peninsula airspace until further notice, it added.

The department also said Irish citizens should also be mindful of similar directions by other aviation authorities which may affect scheduled flights. Citizens with queries about flights should contact their tour operator or airline.

Last Saturday, a flight from Sharm el-Sheikh to St. Petersburg crashed in Egypt's North Sinai. Egyptian and Russian authorities are currently conducting an investigation. Both the United Kingdom and the United States have said there is a significant possibility that the crash was caused by an explosive device. Endit
