Iceland sees increase of foreign visitor overnight stays in September

Iceland saw a year-on-year increase of 36 percent in the number of foreigners who stayed overnight in hotels in September, official figures showed on Thursday.

According to statistics issued by Statistics Iceland, the number of people who paid for accommodations in Icelandic hotels rose to 253,000 in September, a 27 percent increase compared with September 2014.

Meanwhile, foreign tourists accounted for 89 percent of the people who stayed in Icelandic hotels in September, up 36 percent compared with the figure in September 2014. The number of Icelandic citizens staying overnight in hotels decreased 15 percent over the same period.

Foreigners who stayed overnight in Iceland in September were mostly residents from the United States, Germany and Britain.

In the last 12 months, from October 2014 until September 2015, overnight stays in hotels were 2,661,140, which is an increase of around 19 percent compared with the same period of the previous year. Endit
