Balkan stability tested by refugee crisis: Slovenia

Xinhua, November 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

Slovenian government has commented that the refugee crisis was an ongoing test of stability in the Western Balkans, echoing the sentiment expressed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel in recent days, local media reported on Wednesday.

Slovenian Foreign Minister Karl Erjavec said after a meeting of coalition parties late on Tuesday that stability in the Western Balkans is always an issue, but the refugee crisis has made the situation even more delicate, according to the Slovenian Press Agency (STA).

Merkel warned on Tuesday that there was a danger of armed conflict breaking out in the volatile region if Europe fails to manage the refugee crisis properly, the STA reported.

Erjavec said Slovenia had been drawing attention to the possibility of a dangerous escalation of tensions in the Western Balkans and called for efforts to prevent this.

Slovenian Prime Minister Miro Cerar also echoed the sentiment on Tuesday, saying that in the absence of control over the refugee crisis, individual fights could erupt in the region which borders on Slovenia. Endit
