Afghan media hails Chinese VP's visit, urge Kabul to utilize Beijing's leverage in embracing stability

Xinhua, November 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

Afghan newspapers on Wednesday welcomed the visit of Chinese Vice President Li Yuanchao to Kabul as a great opportunity to further enhancing bilateral relations and an occasion to look to Beijing for its influence in achieving lasting peace, stability and economic recovery in the region.

"China, as the first economic power in Asia and second economic power in the world, can help Afghanistan to achieve stability and recover its impoverished economy by investment in development projects," the Daily Etilaat-e-Roz newspaper said in its editorial.

The newspaper also hailed the inking of cooperation agreements during Li's visit here in Kabul on Wednesday.

Taliban militants are threatening peace and stability in the region including China, the paper said, adding that China, as a friend of Pakistan, can influence Islamabad to support the peace process.

"China has the capacity to invest in the mining sector in Afghanistan and thus create job opportunities to bring economic stability and peace and eventually pave the way for boosting trade and economic activities in the region," another newspaper the Daily Afghanistan said in its editorial.

"Durable peace and stability in Afghanistan would benefit China and the whole region," the editorial continued, adding that "the economic presence of China in Afghanistan would solve major parts of Afghanistan's economic problems."

Moreover, the Afghan newspapers gave wide coverage the visit of Vice President Li Yuanchao to Kabul on Wednesday.

The English-language Daily Outlook newspaper published the news on its front page.

"Kabul and Beijing mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties" and "Afghanistan and China sign three cooperation agreements in the fields of security, construction and education," the headlines read.

The newspaper also published the Chinese vice president's speech on the back page and his photos during his meeting with Afghan president Mohammad Ashraf Ghani.

Afghan newspapers also reflected on Ghani's remarks at the banquet to welcome the Chinese vice president at the Presidential Palace, at which he described Beijing as a strategic partner to Kabul in bringing peace and stability to Afghanistan and the wider region. Enditem
