Japanese researcher's doctorate rescinded

Xinhua, November 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

Tokyo's Waseda University announced on Monday that it had stripped Haruko Obokata's doctorate in engineering awarded in 2011, after the disgraced former Riken institute failed to submit a corrected thesis that was of a level necessary for evaluation.

Obokata, 32, came under scrutiny after her alleged falsification of papers on "STAP cell" research that the scientific community initially heralded as groundbreaking.

Waseda University President Kaoru Kamata told a news conference Monday that Obokata submitted her thesis within a one-year grace period, but the content of the paper failed to reach the level required for evaluation. Enditem
