UN calls on Libyan stakeholders to work harder for reaching agreement

Xinhua, November 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on Monday called on the main political stakeholders in Libya to redouble efforts in bringing the Libyan political dialogue process to a successful conclusion, said a UN spokesman at Monday's daily news briefing

"Such a conclusion would allow for an agreement to form a Government of National Accord and resume Libya's democratic transition," said spokesman Stephane Dujarric of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Libya has been plagued by factional fighting since the 2011 revolution, with the situation continuing to deteriorate in recent months amid significant political fragmentation and violence.

Based on broad consultations facilitated by the Secretary-General's Special Representative and head of UNSMIL, Bernardino Leon, a proposal regarding forming a national unity government was announced in mid-October.

"Following this, the Mission has undertaken extensive consultations with parties across the Libyan political spectrum on ways to address some of the concerns with respect to the configuration of the Presidency Council, especially those related to fair and adequate representation for the east, more specifically Benghazi," said Dujarric.

Meanwhile, in response to questions concerning the leadership of UNSMIL, the Secretary-General has reaffirmed that his Special Representative for Libya Bernardino Leon remains fully engaged on his behalf in facilitating the Libyan Political Dialogue, while reiterating his full confidence in Mr. Leon's efforts, according to the spokesman.
