Czech gov't approves sending of 20 police, 50 soldiers to aid Slovenia

The Czech government approved on Monday the sending of 20 police officers to Slovenia to help guard its border with Croatia at the request of Slovenia, said Czech Interior Minister Milan Chovanec.

On the same day, Czech government also approved the sending of up to 50 soldiers, including engineering and health officers, to help Slovenia with border protection, said Czech Defense Minister Martin Stropnicky.

The police officers will leave for Slovenia within a week and the soldiers are to leave in mid-November.

Chovanec said the Czech police officers will be commanded by the Slovenian side to guard the border with Croatia, their mission is to last one month to one month and a half. The police will return before Christmas.

Stropnicky said the soldiers going to Slovenia will also include a medical unit. The Czech troops will take to Slovenia the similar equipment to that of the Czech troops who have been helping with border protection in Hungary since mid-October. These are mainly lorries and engineering equipment.

The costs of the police mission are about 3.5 million crowns (about 0.14 million U.S. dollars), and 4 million crowns (about 0.16 million U.S. dollars) for the soldiers' mission. (1 U.S. dollar = 24.6 crowns) Endit
