S. African policemen arrested for "killing suspect"

Xinhua, November 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

Four South African police officers were arrested on Monday for allegedly involvement in the killing of a suspected robber.

The case is said to take place on Oct. 19, but only came to light over the weekend as CCTV footage shows a police officer fatally shooting the suspect.

The suspect, Khulekani Mpanza, allegedly attempted to rob a shop in Krugersdorp, Gauteng province and fired several shots at the policemen who were chasing him.

He was said to be wounded in the arm later before being cornered unarmed on a pavement.

Then as the video footage shows, a policeman shot him while his colleagues watched on.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate made the arrest and has launched a probe.

The incident is expected to renew concerns about the so-called police brutality in South Africa.

In August 2012, police used excessive force to quell a mining unrest in Marikana, North West province, killing 34 protesters.

In February 2013, a video shows several police officers dragging a taxi driver behind a police vehicle in Benoni near Johannesburg. The taxi driver, from Mozambique, was later found dead in a police cell. Endit
