Wreckage of U.S. missing cargo ship believed to be found

Xinhua, November 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

Wreckage of a U.S. cargo ship, which disappeared with 33 people onboard a month ago near the Bahamas, was believed to be found by U.S. Navy, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said Saturday.

"The target identified by Orion (radar's name) is consistent with a 790-foot (241-meter) cargo ship, which from sonar images appears to be in an upright position and in one piece," the NTSB said.

A U.S. Navy search team has located the wreckage at a depth of about 15,000 feet (4572 meters) of water.

The U.S. cargo ship El Fargo carrying 33 people was missing on October 1 during Hurricane Joaquin en route from Jacksonville, Florida, to Puerto Rico. It sank near the Bahamas after the captain reported a "hull breach" and said a hatch had blown open.

The Navy scheduled to send a remotely-operated underwater craft to investigate the wreckage as early as on Sunday, according to NTSB. Endi
