Profile: Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf

Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf will pay a state visit to China on Nov. 1-5 at the invitation of her Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.

Sirleaf, born on Oct. 29, 1938 in the capital city of Monrovia, studied economics and public policy at Harvard University from 1969 to 1971, gaining a Master of Public Administration.

She once worked as a senior official for the World Bank, the UN Development Programme and some other international organizations. Sirleaf served in her country as assistant minister of finance, deputy minister and minister of finance from 1977 to 1980.

In November 2005, Sirleaf was elected Liberian president, becoming the first woman president in African history. Six years later, she won her second consecutive presidential term and was awarded the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize.

Sirleaf paid a state visit to Beijing in October 2006 and attended the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. Endi
