Myanmar gov't, armed groups agree on some post-ceasefire steps

Xinhua, November 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Myanmar government and eight ceasefired ethnic armed groups out of 15 have agreed on some post-ceasefire steps for adherence by both sides until 30 days after the signing of the Nationwide Ceasefore Accord (NCA), according to an official report Sunday.

It was agreed at the three-day first meeting of their Joint Ceasefire Monitoring Committee at the Myanmar Peace Center here which ended on Saturday.

An official of the Myanmar Peace Center said setting the exact boundaries of each side's territory and having monitoring mechanisms can reduce the risk of recurring conflict between signatories of the two sides.

The mechanisms will allow both sides to deal with possible clashes during the transition period before the monitoring process comes into effect, he added.

The committee set Nov. 16 to hold their second meeting in Nay Pyi Taw.

The Myanmar government and the eight ceasefired ethnic armed groups have formed two joint committees as part of the implementation of the NCA following their signing on Oct. 15.

The two joint committees are Joint Ceasefire Monitoring Committee, which is to prevent recurrence of armed clashes, and the Union Peace Dialogue Joint Committee, which is to facilitate political dialogue .

Both sides also agreed to strive for enabling other remaining armed groups which have not signed the NCA to take part and complete the peace process.

The two sides were set to draw up a political framework within 60 days after the formal NCA signing and start a political dialogue within 90 days.

The eight signatories of the armed groups are Kayin National Union (KNU), Kayin National Liberation Army (KNLA)-Peace Council, Pa-O Nationalities Liberation Organization (PNLO), All Burma Students'Democratic Front (ABSDF), Chin National Front (CNF), Arakan Liberation Party (ALP), Democratic Kayin Buddhist Army (DKBA) and Restoration Council of Shan State (RCSS) / Shan State Army-South (SSA-S).

Meanwhile, the eight ceasefired ethnic armed groups and the remaining non-ceasefired groups are due to meet in Pansai, northeastern Shan state later on Sunday to discuss their future deal with the government. Enditem
