The Confucius Institute of Lome University on Friday celebrated the six-year existence of Chinese language and culture teaching in Togo.

Over a thousand learners, apart from students of the current academic year, effectively attended Chinese language and culture classes during the past six years, following the opening of the Institute in 2009.

These learners came from Lome University, private sector and Togolese public administration. They were in the need of Chinese language acquisition in their professional career.

"We are excited of a positive track record, even if a lot remains to do", Mrs. Tchassim Koutchoukalo, principal of the Institute told Xinhua at the celebration.

She said many of the learners who completed their studies in the Confucius Institute found job in Chinese companies in Togo and in other countries in West Africa.

According to Mrs. Tchassim, efforts are underway so as to make available scholarship for best students of every academic year to study in China.

"Besides, we are actively working towards realizing exchange program for teachers of the Institute and those of Sichuan International Studies University, which is a partner university of Confucius Institute of Lome University," she added.

New language learners staged Chinese and Togolese dances, Chinese songs and poem declamation during the event.

The celebration gathered officials of the Chinese Embassy in Togo, teachers of Lome University and ancient Togolese diplomats to China. Enditem
