UN Security Council highlights increased coordination among principal UN organs

Xinhua, October 31, 2015 Adjust font size:

The UN Security Council on Friday adopted a presidential statement on its working methods, stressing the importance of increased coordination and cooperation among principal organs of the world body.

The 15-nation council noted, in particular, the cooperation and interaction with the General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council and the UN Secretariat, as well as with Peace-building Commission and regional organizations including the African Union.

The most powerful UN body said that "the relationship between the principal organs of the United Nations is mutually reinforcing and complementary, in accordance with and with full respect for their respective functions, authority, powers and competencies as enshrined in the Charter."

The UN Charter established six main organs of the United Nations, including the Security Council. It gives primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security to the Security Council, which may meet whenever peace is threatened.

"The Security Council expresses its intent to continue to hold an annual open debate on its working methods and affirms its commitment to continue to keep its working methods under consideration in its regular work, with a view to ensuring their effective and consistent implementation," said the statement.

While recalling its commitment to making more effective use, as appropriate, of open meetings, the Security Council reiterated its commitment to continue to "take steps to improve the focus and interactivity of its open debates." Endit
