U.S. to deploy troops in Syria to help fight Islamic State: report

The United States is to send a small number of Special Operations forces to the Kurdish-controlled territory in northern Syria to "advise and assist" rebel forces in fighting the Islamic State (IS), the U.S. media reported.

The decision is expected to be announced by the White House later Friday, the U.S. cable TV news network CNN reported, quoting U.S. officials.

Fewer than 50 U.S. troops will be deployed in northern Syria to coordinate the the cooperation between the coalition forces and local rebel forces in the fighting, the report said.

The U.S. Special Operations forces will mainly help local Kurdish and Arab forces fighting the IS with logistics and are planning to bolster their efforts, the report added.

This will be the first time that U.S. troops are deployed on the ground in Syria, where large swaths of territory have been controlled by the IS. Endit
