Restored ancient fort in Malta to host CHOGM 2015

Xinhua, October 31, 2015 Adjust font size:

Malta Prime Minister Joseph Muscat on Friday officially inaugurated the restored Fort St Angelo in Birgu, at the centre of the Grand Harbour.

In November, Fort of St Angelo will be hosting the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, also known as CHOGM 2015. From December, the fort will be open to the public, according to officials.

The inauguration came after work on the fortification of Fort St Angelo was done by Heritage Malta during the last two years.

For several years, the fort was in a bad state of repair. However, this 15-million-euro project, which was mainly financed by the European Union, has helped this site to regain its former glory.

This year, Malta is commemorating the 450th anniversary of the Great Siege of 1565, wherein the Order of St John which was ruling this country in that period was attacked by a huge Ottoman army, but succeeded to come out victorious. During this battle, the mighty Fort St Angelo was chosen as the place of refuge where to retreat as a last resort, should the Order of St John lose the war. Enditem
