China launches campaign against crimes through telecom

Xinhua, October 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

China will launch a six-month campaign against phone-based crime next month, the Ministry of Public Security said Friday.

The campaign will investigate unregistered SIM cards and other circumstances in a bid to block channels for crime.

Police will use SMS, microblogs, WeChat and other means to publicize the initiative.

The ministry asked local departments to establish systems to check real time activity, pause suspicious transactions and freeze accounts. The police will also cooperate with third-party payment companies on a call-barring application.

Vice Minister of Public Security Li Wei, who was speaking during a meeting on the campaign, said that telecommunication scams were a major social problem.

Senior ministry officials have vowed to do more to safeguard the public's interests. Endi
