One Palestinian was killed and another critically wounded while they were trying to stab an Israeli soldier in the West Bank on Friday noon, Israeli police said.

"At about 12:00 pm local time (1000 GMT), two attackers reached the Tapuach checkpoint on motorcycles. As they disembarked from the motorcycle, they approached a border police guard with knives drawn out, and were shot by another guard at the scene," said a statement by the Israeli police.

No Israeli was injured in the attempted attack. Border guards at the scene shot at the perpetrators and killed one of them, while wounding the other critically.

On Thursday, Israeli soldiers shot dead two Palestinians as they allegedly tried to carry out stabbing attacks in Hebron. No Israelis were injured in the attempted attacks.

The incident is the latest in a month-long wave of violence between Israelis and Palestinians. The unrest started over tensions regarding the al-Aqsa mosque compound in east Jerusalem and spread to the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and throughout Israel.

Eleven Israelis have been killed in the past month in the attacks, mainly stabbing and shooting. While at least 68 Palestinians died, some in clashes while others were shot by Israeli security forces and vigilante citizens. Endit
